Far-field cancellation technology
  Download PDF

Audiocoil-enabled hearing aids allow users to listen to telephones without experiencing acoustic feedback. Instead of using a microphone to detect the sound produced by a telephone, an audiocoil-enabled hearing aid detects the magnetic field generated by the telephone handset. This signal is then transformed into amplified sound using the circuitry and miniature speaker in the hearing aid.

Audiocoils significantly improve the telephone experience for hearing aid users. However, traditional audiocoils are susceptible to electromagnetic interference created by sources such as computer monitors, power lines, fluorescent lights, industrial equipment, appliances, and other household electrical and electronic equipment. This interference has been a primary complaint of hearing aid users and is probably a significant deterrent to more widespread telecoil use. The proliferation of electronic devices in modern life only increases the potential for interference. To combat this, Tibbetts Industries has developed far-field cancelling (FFC) technology that significantly improves the telephone experience by reducing this interference.
